Bridge House Independent School

Humanities (KS1-KS3)

In History, our aim to develop young historians who can reason, discern and critically think whilst understanding and appreciating the past.

History allows our children to compare and contrast, examine how and why things have changed and expand their research skills.

Our children are taught to become open minded individuals, who understand cause and effect, which are essential skills for our children to become well rounded individuals who can make positive contributions to their local community.

History follows the school’s enquiry-based approach, which allows children to investigate, interpret and analyse historical events, giving children opportunities to develop reasoning and critical thinking skills. Our history lessons will remove the idea that there are right and wrong views of history and ensure children are able to share their own opinions whilst being open to other views without judgement.

Throughout their journey at Bridge House, our children will have the opportunity to extend their knowledge of key historic events and periods through engaging and enriching school visits. Our children will also develop a strong appreciation of the significance of History to their own lives and the world around them on a personal, national, and international level.

In Geography children will become curious and fascinated about the world we live in and its people, through exploration and investigation of local communities and environments, the UK and the wider world.

Children will develop their knowledge about diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, whilst also developing their understanding of themselves, peers, and the local community.

Throughout their time at Bridge House children will gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. In line with this, our children will gain the skills to develop geographical lines of enquiry, decision-making skills and build knowledge on geographical content.

Our children will have opportunities to engage as Geographers to develop their geographical, fieldwork and mathematical skills through planned trips within the local community. Children use a range of maps and atlases so that geography map and fieldwork skills are systematically developed, whilst providing our children with essential skills to navigate their own independence after they leave Bridge House.
